Children's Literature Conferences

Each year various colleges and universities hold children's literature conferences that feature some famous children's literature authors and some up-and-coming authors. These conferences attract a varied array of people from college professors to people hoping to become children's literature authors themselves. Many librarians, especially children's librarians, also visit the conferences so that they can be up-to-date on the most recent trends in children's literature. These conferences also attract Language Arts teachers from the elementary level to high school.

One of the most attractive features of these children's literature conferences is that many of the featured speakers are famous children's authors. Certainly listening to published authors is a great inspiration to anyone interested in children's literature. Conferences also feature attendees a chance to meet the authors. This is usually a party type atmosphere where everyone gets a chance to talk to the authors and quiz them about their published books and their future books. These conferences are also a time to celebrate children's literature and its incredible impact on children.

Going to children's literature conferences helps professionals in many way. The speakers' talks help everyone stay motivated in their love for children's literature. Maybe professionals become so wrapped up in the day-to-day aspects of their jobs that they need to take a few days away from work to become inspired again about what they love about their professions. These conferences often give the attendees that extra boost they need to go back to work with the determination to inspire others to love children's literature. Learning about new authors is another important reason to attend these conferences. Staying current is certainly an obligation for any professional. A new author is an opportunity to discover new books, stories, and illustrations. Getting excited about children's literature helps professionals to ignite children's interest in these new authors too.

Each year Western Washington University holds a children's literature conference. It is called The Western University's Bond Children's Literature Conference. It is named after the late Guy L. Bond and Fredricka Bond who were dedicated teachers and professionals. The event celebrated a love for children's literature and it wonderful impact on the lives of children and adults.

The 2008 conference will feature several very important children's authors. For anyone interested in children's literature or for professionals, this conference is a not to be missed opportunity. One of the featured speakers is Lois Lowry who received the 2007 Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults. Anyone who is familiar with children's literature knows that Ms. Lowry has written some the finest books in young adult literature. If she had just written one book, she would have deserved the award. Her book The Giver is certainly one of those life changing books that no one who has read it will ever forget. A chance to hear Ms. Lowry speak is reason enough to attend this conference. Being able to meet her is certainly a privilege.

Another wonderful speaker is the delightful David Wiesner who recently won the Caldecott Medal for Flotsam, The Three Pigs, and Tuesday. This prestigious award given annually to the best American picture book artist of the year. His imagination and beautifully painted illustrations make him one of the most important artists of his generation. His highly original and fanciful illustrations make his books very popular with children and adults. Although the three little pigs has been published in many forms and fashions, his books The Three Little Pigs is so off the wall and different, readers will forget that they have ever read the story before. Thinks dragons, a cat with a fiddle, and flying pigs.

Going to children's literature conferences is a privilege and a professional obligation for professionals in the children's literature field. Everyone needs a refresher course each year so that they will always remember why they chose children's literature as a life's work in the first place.
